The importance of a file extension is to enable the operating system to correctly link a file of a certain type to the software application that owns or manages it for proper functioning.

Examples of File Extensions; ‘.docx‘ created by Microsoft Word, ‘.jpg‘ created by System Camera and ‘.config‘ created by the system (OS).
