This issue occurs rarely in Proton VPN. The root cause can be, but not limited to, that;
– your VPN had an issue during startup
– you have an issue with your internet connection (you might not have one, or it might be very slow)

[ SOLUTION 1 ]

– close the error window
– quit Proton VPN GUI/CLI window or kill Proton VPN’s process via Terminal
– open a new instance of Proton VPN
– check whether you have an Internet connection
– connect to a VPN Server Location of choice
– enable “Kill Switch” or “Permanent Kill Switch” if you wish to

[ SOLUTION 2 ]

If the above solution doesn’t work;
– disable “Kill Switch” or “Permanent Kill Switch”
– confirm that you have an Internet connection
– navigate to the Proton VPN menu and click on “Logout“ [this should lead to the Sign In / Log In interface]
– enter your account details, Username/Email & Password, and get back to Proton VPN
– connect to a VPN Server Location of choice
– enable “Kill Switch” or “Permanent Kill Switch” if you wish to
